Hasan Ibrahim Belal (b. 1993, Syria) is a Syrian documentary photographer and photojournalist  whose work explores memory, identity, displacement, and the social transformations shaped by more than fourteen years of war.

For Belal, photography is a means of communication a way to understand, question, and interpret everyday life. Working through the lens of visual anthropology, he investigates how identity is embedded within people, places, and collective experiences, documenting the subtle ways conflict reshapes communities and their relationship to space.

His practice is deeply collaborative. Rather than positioning himself as an outside observer, Belal works closely with the people he photographs, treating them as active participants in the storytelling process. Together, they build narratives that amplify marginalized voices and create meaningful impact on the ground.

His work extends beyond personal authorship, evolving into a shared visual memory that reflects lived realities through collective experience.

Belal graduated with a degree in Economics from a university in Syria and has worked as a photographer since 2010, specializing in photojournalism and visual anthropology. Throughout his career, he has collaborated with numerous local and international media organizations and humanitarian agencies, including AFP, Le Monde,La Times – The Globe and mail, UNICEF, ICRC, Caritas, Anadolu Agency, and The National News, producing long-term visual stories about life during and after the Syrian war.

His work has been presented in three solo exhibitions in Switzerland and Beirut, in addition to numerous group exhibitions across Syria and the Arab region. His most recent project, I Feel Longing, was developed during an artist residency in Switzerland, where he explored migration and the demographic and economic challenges faced by immigrant communities. The project was exhibited at Château Mercier and HES-SO Valais-Wallis in Switzerland. where he continued his research on migration and the demographic and economic challenges experienced by immigrant communities

Belal’s photographs have also been featured in books and publications produced by the Sharjah Art Foundation, Guld Photo, the Middle East Archive, Le Monde, and AFP.

He received a Thomson Reuters Foundation grant to participate in the Dar Al-Musawir photojournalism training program in Beirut, which concluded with a group exhibition. He also completed an artist residency in Switzerland,.
